In the midst of searching for topics to write about, I found that freelancing definition was one of the most popular searches. The term itself made me wonder why people are searching for it. Do they genuinely not know what freelancing means? Or, maybe they’re trying to secure a freelancing definition that works for them.
When I first began working as a freelance writer, my version of the phrase freelancing definition meant slogging my guts off in every way possible. While I still try my best to increase my income, I also spend more time on my creative pursuits. As such, to me, my freelancing definition is being able to generate the life that you want.
If you’re going to succeed as a freelancer, you need to do the same. We all have to fit into a mould to some degree, but developing your own means of working is a huge act of self-love you’ll always thank yourself for.
First of all, your freelancing definition is whatever you want it to be
Does your idea of working as a freelancer mean traveling the world and exploring new places? Or, maybe it means setting up a small corner office in your bedroom and focusing on your work while your kids give you a spare few moments. Whatever vision you have in your mind, that is forming the cornerstone of your freelancing definition.
For some, the idea of becoming a freelancer means finding a freedom that they didn’t have before. To others, it’s a means of making extra money on the side. To find out what this lifestyle means to you, take some time to write down why you want to become a freelancer, and the benefits it will bring to your life.
However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in some effort
Now that I’ve done the whole flowery “your definition of what freelancing is is unique to you” thing, I do also need to highlight that creating your freelancing definition requires effort. Hopefully, at this stage, you at least know what it is that you want to do. From there, you need to begin planning how you’ll find freelancing jobs online.
While the approach you take to finding freelancing work and setting your schedule will vary, you do need to work towards consistency. If you find that not enough work is coming your way, then start pitching and grabbing new clients.
Or, if you’re left feeling as though your life as a freelancer is chaotic, set a schedule. You could try buying a planner, printing off something that directs you towards creating the lifestyle for you, or downloading a to-do app on your phone.
One trick I find particularly handy is setting aside a few moments each morning to add my ‘to do’ tasks to my app. As I have other responsibilities outside of being a freelance writer, this is a necessity. However it is you choose to stay organized, just make sure you do it.
Be prepared to constantly upskill and thrive
One of the greatest perks of being a freelancer is that it’s down to you whether and how you upskill. I highly recommend that you do, as it’s one of the few ways to guarantee you’ll get an edge over your competition.
But, what does upskilling mean? As someone who also works as a physician associate/assistant/whatever we’re called in your country, I have to gain 50 Continuing Professional Development points per year. For me, this can mean taking a class that teaches me how to read a particular type of x-ray. Or, heading for a seminar.
As a freelancer, you can take a similar approach to upskilling. Consider whether there are any courses, networking events, or marketing tactics you can try that will help you thrive. If you’re struggli
ng with motivation, I highly recommend reading You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. It’s a great text for those who need to give themselves a little oomph.
But, try to ensure your freelancing definition caters to what you want from life
Maybe you decided you were going to create your own freelancing definition because you wanted to escape the rat race. Or, there’s a chance that you just fancied a bit of a change.
Whatever your initial motivation was, consider what you want from life. Not just from your freelancing life, but from the life you want to live in general. For me, this means being able to travel more, even just throughout the UK. In a more niche sense, I want to spend time seeing castles and old buildings. When I generate more money from freelancing, I can use it to do those things.
So, fo forth and create your own freelancing definition. And, if you feel like returning and telling me all about it, please do.
